What is EMDR?

EMDR, short for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, aims to alleviate the impact of trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Endorsed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), it offers an effective means of treatment for PTSD. Through my EMDR therapy services in Bedford, I offer valuable relief from trauma and PTSD symptoms.

Initially designed to assist individuals coping with trauma, PTSD, and complex PTSD in managing distressing memories stemming from experiences like abuse, accidents, childbirth complications, or combat, EMDR therapy has expanded its efficacy to address various other mental health difficulties, including anxiety, depression, and adverse childhood experiences.

How does EMDR work?

EMDR helps individuals in processing traumatic events along with the associated images, emotions, and beliefs that are stuck in the emotional center of the brain. Through bilateral stimulation like eye movements, tapping, or audio cues, EMDR assists the brain in processing and resolving the traumatic event by transferring the trapped information to the more adaptive region of the brain responsible for sense making and logic. Once these memories are processed, it often results in a decrease in trauma and PTSD symptoms.

What is the evidence base for EMDR?

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an empirically validated treatment for trauma. It has been shown to reduce symptoms quicker and better maintain improvements than other therapies. EMDR therapy has emerged as an economically efficient psychological treatment for PTSD.
